Most volatile crypto: 10 big coins ranked by daily moves
SOL had the biggest typical day of 10 big Binance coins (2.91%), but AVAX led 4 of 6 years and DOGE had the biggest days. See the order by year.
Solana had the biggest typical day of the 10 big coins we measured, but only by a hair. On Binance, SOLUSDT's median day moved 2.91% in either direction (2,226 days since September 2020), just ahead of AVAXUSDT at 2.88% and LINKUSDT at 2.79%. TRX (1.28%) and Bitcoin (1.38%) were the calmest. The answer depends on how you measure: AVAX had the biggest median day in four of the six years from 2021 to 2026, and DOGE had the biggest single days. These are past cases, not a forecast.
For Bitcoin's own daily moves in detail, see How much does Bitcoin move in a day?.
What do we mean by "most volatile"?
Volatility means how much prices move. We measure the absolute daily move: the change from one close to the next, sign removed, so a 3% rise and a 3% fall both count as 3%.
We use three views of it. The median is the middle day when all days are lined up by size, so it shows a normal day. The share of days over 10% shows how often a coin has a big day. The 99th percentile is the size that 99 out of 100 days stayed below, so it shows how big the very large days get. A perp is a futures contract that never expires. All coins below are Binance USDT perps.
Which coin has the biggest typical day?
Here are the 10 coins ranked by median daily move over their whole Binance history. Start dates differ, so the rows cover different years.
| Rank | Coin | Days measured | Median daily move | Days over 10% | 99th percentile day |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SOLUSDT | 2,226 | 2.91% | 7.55% | 19.75% |
| 2 | AVAXUSDT | 2,217 | 2.88% | 7.53% | 20.41% |
| 3 | LINKUSDT | 2,467 | 2.79% | 6.57% | 17.56% |
| 4 | ADAUSDT | 2,453 | 2.41% | 5.58% | 17.88% |
| 5 | DOGEUSDT | 2,292 | 2.33% | 6.63% | 22.44% |
| 6 | XRPUSDT | 2,478 | 1.96% | 4.72% | 19.17% |
| 7 | ETHUSDT | 2,518 | 1.95% | 3.26% | 13.64% |
| 8 | BNBUSDT | 2,443 | 1.57% | 2.74% | 16.52% |
| 9 | BTCUSDT | 2,598 | 1.38% | 1.31% | 10.58% |
| 10 | TRXUSDT | 2,469 | 1.28% | 3.28% | 15.68% |
SOL and AVAX are 0.03 points apart, too close to call a winner. The bigger split is between the top five, all above 2%, and the bottom five.
The ranking depends on the measure. DOGE is fifth by median but first by 99th percentile, so its biggest days were the biggest. TRX is last by median but seventh by share of days over 10%, ahead of BNB and Bitcoin.
How did the ranking change by year?
Each cell is the median absolute daily move for that calendar year. The 2026 column ends on October 19. This table starts in 2021, the first year all 10 coins had a full year of data.
| Coin | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SOLUSDT | 4.17% | 3.38% | 2.70% | 2.75% | 2.49% | 1.74% |
| AVAXUSDT | 4.74% | 3.38% | 2.08% | 2.96% | 2.97% | 1.84% |
| LINKUSDT | 4.35% | 3.09% | 2.09% | 2.78% | 2.70% | 1.71% |
| ADAUSDT | 3.20% | 2.45% | 1.77% | 2.31% | 2.45% | 2.28% |
| DOGEUSDT | 3.59% | 2.60% | 1.64% | 2.68% | 2.81% | 1.59% |
| XRPUSDT | 3.29% | 2.14% | 1.46% | 1.55% | 1.99% | 1.53% |
| ETHUSDT | 3.33% | 2.35% | 1.12% | 1.75% | 1.97% | 1.45% |
| BNBUSDT | 3.19% | 1.94% | 1.03% | 1.59% | 1.35% | 1.15% |
| BTCUSDT | 2.35% | 1.47% | 1.00% | 1.37% | 1.15% | 1.17% |
| TRXUSDT | 3.17% | 1.49% | 1.03% | 1.07% | 1.04% | 0.61% |
The top and bottom coin of each year:
| Year | Biggest median day | Smallest median day |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | LINKUSDT, 3.31% | BTCUSDT, 1.47% |
| 2021 | AVAXUSDT, 4.74% | BTCUSDT, 2.35% |
| 2022 | AVAXUSDT, 3.38% | BTCUSDT, 1.47% |
| 2023 | SOLUSDT, 2.70% | BTCUSDT, 1.00% |
| 2024 | AVAXUSDT, 2.96% | TRXUSDT, 1.07% |
| 2025 | AVAXUSDT, 2.97% | TRXUSDT, 1.04% |
| 2026 | ADAUSDT, 2.28% | TRXUSDT, 0.61% |
AVAX led four of the six years from 2021 to 2026, though in 2022 it beat SOL by under 0.01 points. The whole group got calmer: the top median fell from 4.74% in 2021 to 2.28% in 2026. Bitcoin was the calmest coin until 2023, and TRX has been since 2024. The 2020 row covers only seven coins, because the others had under 200 days that year.
Where do XRP, DOGE and SOL stand?
- SOL against XRP: SOL's median day was larger in each of the six years. In 2023 it was 2.70% against 1.46%.
- DOGE against XRP: DOGE's was larger in each of the six years too. In 2024 it was 2.68% against 1.55%.
- SOL against DOGE: SOL was larger in five of the six years. DOGE won in 2025 only, with 2.81% against 2.49%.
On share of days over 10%, the order was SOL (7.55%), DOGE (6.63%) and XRP (4.72%). But XRP's 99th percentile of 19.17% is close to SOL's 19.75% and above ADA's and LINK's, even though its median is lower. XRP had a calm normal day and a few very large ones. For one coin in depth, see our Solana and Dogecoin numbers.
What do the weekly falls say?
Another way to rank volatility is how often a coin fell hard over a week. For each day we compared the close with the close 7 days earlier. Neighboring days overlap, so one bad week counts several days.
| Coin | Fell 10% or more | Fell 20% or more | Fell 30% or more |
|---|---|---|---|
| AVAXUSDT | 20.40% | 5.52% | 1.18% |
| SOLUSDT | 17.43% | 4.23% | 1.08% |
| DOGEUSDT | 16.49% | 3.19% | 0.79% |
| LINKUSDT | 16.21% | 3.94% | 1.02% |
| ADAUSDT | 15.82% | 3.02% | 0.65% |
| XRPUSDT | 11.57% | 2.47% | 0.97% |
| ETHUSDT | 10.83% | 2.39% | 0.72% |
| BNBUSDT | 7.67% | 1.60% | 0.66% |
| BTCUSDT | 6.79% | 1.27% | 0.35% |
| TRXUSDT | 6.66% | 1.54% | 0.73% |
By this measure AVAX is first and SOL second, the reverse of the median ranking. The bottom three are again BNB, Bitcoin and TRX.
What were the biggest single days?
| Coin | Biggest up day | Biggest down day |
|---|---|---|
| SOLUSDT | +50.56% (Nov 10, 2022) | -50.88% (Nov 9, 2022) |
| AVAXUSDT | +72.11% (Feb 10, 2021) | -37.89% (May 19, 2021) |
| LINKUSDT | +33.30% (Dec 2, 2024) | -47.76% (Mar 12, 2020) |
| ADAUSDT | +72.04% (Mar 2, 2025) | -41.29% (Mar 12, 2020) |
| DOGEUSDT | +389.81% (Jan 28, 2021) | -39.00% (Jan 30, 2021) |
| XRPUSDT | +73.23% (Jul 13, 2023) | -41.87% (Dec 23, 2020) |
| ETHUSDT | +26.48% (Jan 3, 2021) | -45.22% (Mar 12, 2020) |
| BNBUSDT | +70.85% (Feb 19, 2021) | -44.08% (Mar 12, 2020) |
| BTCUSDT | +19.57% (Feb 8, 2021) | -39.98% (Mar 12, 2020) |
| TRXUSDT | +95.82% (Dec 3, 2024) | -43.83% (Mar 12, 2020) |
Solana's two biggest days came back to back: a fall, then a rise of about the same size. Six of the other nine worst days landed on March 12, 2020.
What does this data not show?
It does not forecast anything. Which coin was most volatile in the past says nothing about next year. A big median move is not the same as risk of loss: the numbers ignore direction, so a coin can rank high because it rose fast. The list is 10 large coins that still trade today, so coins that faded away are missing. And start dates differ, so the yearly table is the fairer comparison.
How we measured this
We used Binance daily price bars for the 10 USDT perps, through October 19, 2026. Each daily move is close-to-close on UTC days, and each coin starts when its contract began. A coin counts in a year's ranking only with at least 200 daily moves that year. Weekly falls compare each close with the close 7 days earlier. No fees, funding or trading rule are involved.
