Is BNB less volatile? BNB price history in numbers
On Binance, BNB's median day moved 1.57% vs 1.38% for Bitcoin, yet its worst yearly fall was deeper in 6 of 7 years. See weekly falls and 24-hour rises.
BNB had a smaller typical day than most big coins, but not smaller than Bitcoin's. On Binance's BNBUSDT perp, the median day moved 1.57% in either direction from February 2020 to October 19, 2026, against 1.38% for Bitcoin's BTCUSDT. Of the 10 big coins we measured, only TRX (1.28%) and Bitcoin were calmer. But its worst fall inside each year was deeper than Bitcoin's in 6 of 7 years, as deep as -64.93% in 2020.
These numbers describe past cases. They are not a forecast.
Is BNB really calmer than other coins?
Mostly yes, on a normal day. We measure the absolute daily move: the change from one close to the next, sign removed, so a 2% rise and a 2% fall both count as 2%. We then take the median, the middle day when all days are lined up by size, so a few huge days cannot drag it around. A perp is a futures contract that never expires. All numbers are from Binance USDT perps.
| Binance perp | Days measured | Median daily move | Days that moved more than 10% | Biggest-day level (99th percentile) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BNBUSDT | 2,443 | 1.57% | 2.74% | 16.52% |
| BTCUSDT | 2,598 | 1.38% | 1.31% | 10.58% |
| ETHUSDT | 2,518 | 1.95% | 3.26% | 13.64% |
| SOLUSDT | 2,226 | 2.91% | 7.55% | 19.75% |
The last column is the size that 99 out of 100 days stayed below. BNB's median sits between Bitcoin and Ethereum. Its big days are a different matter: the 99th percentile of 16.52% is higher than Ethereum's 13.64%, even though its median is lower. A coin can be quiet most days and still have a few very large ones.
BNB's largest up day was +70.85% on February 19, 2021, and the next day it fell 24.33%. Bitcoin's largest up day was +19.57%. Both coins had their worst day on March 12, 2020: BNB fell 44.08% and Bitcoin fell 39.98%.
How did BNB's daily move change by year?
The all-years numbers hide a lot. Here is BNB next to Bitcoin for each calendar year. BNBUSDT starts on February 10, 2020, so 2020 covers 325 days for BNB. The 2026 row ends on October 19.
| Year | BNB median day | BTC median day | BNB days over 10% | BTC days over 10% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 2.46% | 1.47% | 3.08% | 2.19% |
| 2021 | 3.19% | 2.35% | 10.68% | 2.74% |
| 2022 | 1.94% | 1.47% | 2.47% | 2.47% |
| 2023 | 1.03% | 1.00% | 0.55% | 0.27% |
| 2024 | 1.59% | 1.37% | 0.82% | 0.55% |
| 2025 | 1.35% | 1.15% | 0.55% | 0.00% |
| 2026 | 1.15% | 1.17% | 0.68% | 0.68% |
In 2021, more than 1 day in 10 for BNB moved over 10%. In 2023 and 2026, BNB and Bitcoin looked almost the same. So "BNB is calmer than other coins" is true for the whole history, but the gap to Bitcoin changed from year to year. From 2023 on, both coins had smaller typical days than in 2021 and 2022.
How often did BNB fall 10%, 20% or 30% in a week?
For each day we compared the close with the close 7 days earlier. The number in brackets counts episodes: separate stretches, where an episode starts on the first day that crosses the line after at least 7 days without crossing it.
| 7-day fall of at least | BNB share of days (episodes) | BTC share of days (episodes) |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 7.67% (45) | 6.79% (46) |
| 20% | 1.60% (11) | 1.27% (10) |
| 30% | 0.66% (4) | 0.35% (2) |
BNB spent a slightly larger share of days in these falls than Bitcoin at every level, though it had one fewer 10% episode. A bad week usually covers several days in a row. For Bitcoin alone, see how often Bitcoin drops 10% in a week. Looking at the 10% line by year, BNB's share was 12.60% in both 2021 and 2022, against 14.52% and 12.33% for Bitcoin. From 2023 to 2025, BNB's share was higher each year: 3.29% against 1.92%, 5.19% against 3.28%, and 4.11% against 3.29%. In 2026 both were at 5.48%.
What was BNB's worst fall in each year?
This is the deepest fall inside each calendar year, from the highest close so far that year (a yearly max drawdown). We then count the days from the low until a close got back to that high. "Not yet" means not by October 19, 2026.
| Year | BNB worst fall | BNB days low to recovery | BTC worst fall | BTC days low to recovery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | -64.93% | 184 | -54.00% | 137 |
| 2021 | -61.50% | 1,108 | -53.22% | 91 |
| 2022 | -62.93% | 633 | -66.94% | 446 |
| 2023 | -40.98% | 126 | -20.01% | 42 |
| 2024 | -34.74% | 120 | -26.26% | 61 |
| 2025 | -36.76% | not yet | -32.05% | not yet |
| 2026 | -42.38% | not yet | -39.52% | not yet |
This is the main surprise. BNB's typical day was calm, yet its worst yearly fall was deeper than Bitcoin's in 6 of 7 years. Only in 2022 was Bitcoin's fall deeper. A small daily move says nothing about a long run of down days. In 2021, BNB fell 61.50% between May 3 and May 23, and it needed 1,108 days after the low to close above that May high again, on June 4, 2024.

How often did BNB rise over 24 hours, compared with a coin flip?
A fair coin lands heads 50% of the time. We took every hourly closing price on Binance BNBUSDT as a start and checked whether the close 24 hours later was higher. Over 58,624 starts, it was higher 52.28% of the time. For Bitcoin it was 51.88% across 62,335 starts.
| Year | BNB up after 24 hours | BTC up after 24 hours |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 54.45% | 58.03% |
| 2021 | 54.05% | 52.32% |
| 2022 | 48.31% | 46.88% |
| 2023 | 50.89% | 52.79% |
| 2024 | 53.89% | 53.75% |
| 2025 | 53.18% | 51.35% |
| 2026 | 51.18% | 51.15% |
BNB was above 50% in 6 of 7 years. Fees matter too. A long trade with a 0.05% fee each way would have ended up in only 50.43% of these windows. The median 24-hour move was +0.12% for BNB. The 10th and 90th percentiles were -3.61% and +4.12%, so a 24-hour window often moved much more than the median.
What does this data not show?
It does not forecast anything, and it does not explain why BNB moved as it did. This is one coin on one exchange over one stretch of years. The 24-hour windows start every hour, so they overlap: the 58,624 starts are not 58,624 separate tests. A year with a long rally pushes the up-share above 50%, and that says nothing about next year. Our 10 coins are big coins that still trade today, which can make history look kinder than it was for coins that faded away.
How we measured this
We used Binance daily and hourly price bars for the BNBUSDT and BTCUSDT perps, through October 19, 2026. Daily moves are close-to-close on UTC days. Weekly falls compare closes 7 days apart. Yearly falls restart the running high each January. The 24-hour numbers use hourly closes, with flat results counted as not up. Fees use an example 0.05% per side; funding, spread and slippage are not included.
