Dogecoin volatility in numbers: how big DOGE's days get
A typical Dogecoin day moved 2.33% on Binance vs 1.38% for Bitcoin, and 1 day in 5 moved over 5%. Big days, weekly falls and recoveries.
On Binance's DOGEUSDT perp, a typical Dogecoin day moved 2.33% from July 2020 to October 19, 2026, ignoring direction. Bitcoin's typical day on the same exchange moved 1.38%. DOGE moved more than 5% on 21.20% of days, about 1 day in 5, while Bitcoin did so on 9.24%.
These are past cases, not a forecast. A "perp" is a futures contract that never expires. Prices are in USDT, a coin that tracks the US dollar.
What counts as a "typical day" for DOGE?
We measured how far each day's closing price moved from the day before, on the UTC world clock, with the plus or minus sign removed. The typical day is the median of those sizes: half the days were smaller, and half were bigger.
| Year | DOGE days counted | DOGE typical day | DOGE days over 10% | BTC typical day | BTC days over 10% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 174 | 1.46% | 7.47% | 1.47% | 2.19% |
| 2021 | 365 | 3.59% | 17.26% | 2.35% | 2.74% |
| 2022 | 365 | 2.60% | 5.75% | 1.47% | 2.47% |
| 2023 | 365 | 1.64% | 0.82% | 1.00% | 0.27% |
| 2024 | 366 | 2.68% | 6.56% | 1.37% | 0.55% |
| 2025 | 365 | 2.81% | 5.48% | 1.15% | 0.00% |
| 2026 | 292 | 1.59% | 2.74% | 1.17% | 0.68% |
| All years | 2,292 | 2.33% | 6.63% | 1.38% | 1.31% |
Our DOGE history starts on July 10, 2020, so its 2020 row is a partial year. Both coins' 2026 rows run only through October 19, 2026.
Is DOGE more volatile than Bitcoin?
Yes, in almost every year. In 2020, DOGE's typical day (1.46%) was about the same as Bitcoin's (1.47%). From 2021 on, DOGE's typical day was bigger every year. In 2025, DOGE's 2.81% was more than double Bitcoin's 1.15%.
DOGE moved in waves: 3.59% in 2021, 1.64% in 2023, then 2.68% in 2024. In 2026 through October 19, its typical day was 1.59%, the lowest of any year since 2020. Among the 10 Binance coins we measured, DOGE ranked 5th over its whole history. How big do DOGE's biggest days get?
On 1 day in 10, DOGE moved more than 8.03%. On 1 day in 100, it moved more than 22.44%. The average daily move was 3.86%, well above the typical 2.33%, because a few huge days pull the average up.
The biggest days were all in 2021. The largest rise was +389.81% on January 28, 2021. Next came +101.19% on April 16, 2021 and +85.60% on January 2, 2021. The largest falls were −39.00% on January 30, 2021, −36.35% on June 21, 2021 and −30.78% on May 19, 2021.
How often did DOGE fall or jump 10%, 20% or 30% in a week?
For every day, we compared the closing price with the close seven days earlier. The table counts days where the price was at least that far below, or above.
| Move over 7 days | DOGE falls: days (share) | DOGE falls: episodes | DOGE rises: days (share) | BTC falls: days (share) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10% or more | 377 (16.49%) | 72 | 375 (16.40%) | 176 (6.79%) |
| 20% or more | 73 (3.19%) | 24 | 175 (7.66%) | 33 (1.27%) |
| 30% or more | 18 (0.79%) | 8 | 96 (4.20%) | 9 (0.35%) |
One bad week gives several bad days in a row, so we also count separate episodes: the first day past the line after at least seven days without one.
At 10%, falls and rises were about equally common. At 30%, rises were more than five times as common as falls: 96 days against 18. Part of this is percent math: a fall can never pass 100%, but a rise can. Of the 96 days with a 30% weekly rise, 49 came in 2021.
All 18 days with a 30% weekly fall came in two years: 9 in 2021 and 9 in 2022. A 10% weekly fall happened on 28.49% of days in 2021, 23.29% in 2025 and only 7.40% in 2023.
How deep were DOGE's yearly drops, and how long did they last?
For each calendar year, we found the largest fall from a closing high reached earlier that year. Then we counted the days from the low until the first later close at or above that high. A recovery here means getting back to that year's own high, not to an all-time high.
| Year | DOGE biggest fall | High to low (date, close in US cents) | DOGE days from low back to that high | BTC biggest fall | BTC days from low back |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | −34.05% | 2020-07-11, 0.38¢ to 2020-11-02, 0.25¢ | 22 | −54.00% | 137 |
| 2021 | −77.27% | 2021-05-07, 69.15¢ to 2021-12-13, 15.72¢ | not yet | −53.22% | 91 |
| 2022 | −71.33% | 2022-01-15, 18.44¢ to 2022-06-18, 5.29¢ | 648 | −66.94% | 446 |
| 2023 | −39.85% | 2023-01-31, 9.62¢ to 2023-10-12, 5.79¢ | 57 | −20.01% | 42 |
| 2024 | −58.03% | 2024-03-31, 22.02¢ to 2024-09-06, 9.24¢ | 65 | −26.26% | 61 |
| 2025 | −71.72% | 2025-01-17, 41.51¢ to 2025-12-31, 11.74¢ | not yet | −32.05% | not yet |
| 2026 | −54.46% | 2026-01-05, 15.17¢ to 2026-08-06, 6.91¢ | not yet | −39.52% | not yet |
"Not yet" means no daily close through October 19, 2026 had got back to that high. It does not mean it never will.
DOGE's yearly fall was deeper than Bitcoin's in six of the seven rows. The exception is 2020, because Bitcoin's −54.00% fall ran from February 14 to March 12, before our DOGE history starts. Of the falls that did recover, 2022 took the longest: DOGE first closed back at its January 15, 2022 high on March 27, 2024, 648 days after the low. Did DOGE rise more often than a coin flip over 24 hours?
For every hourly closing price, we looked at the price 24 hours later and asked whether it was higher. A coin flip would say yes 50% of the time.
| 24 hours later | DOGE | BTC |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly start points | 54,999 | 62,335 |
| Share higher | 48.80% | 51.88% |
| Share higher after 0.05% fee each way | 47.50% | 49.30% |
| Middle move | −0.08% | +0.07% |
| 10th percentile | −5.15% | −3.07% |
| 90th percentile | +5.49% | +3.49% |
DOGE was higher 24 hours later a little less than half the time, and Bitcoin a little more than half. By year, DOGE's share higher ran from 46.23% in 2026 to 50.98% in 2023, so it was not a steady lean.
How we measured this
We used Binance's daily and hourly price bars for the DOGEUSDT and BTCUSDT perps, through October 19, 2026. Yearly drops restart the running high each January and use daily closes, which can miss a low or high inside the day. The 24-hour test uses every hourly close with a full 24 hours of later closes, and flat results count as not higher. These windows overlap, so 54,999 start points are not 54,999 separate tests. The fee line applies 0.05% to entry and exit and leaves out funding, spread and slippage. This is one contract on one exchange, and DOGE's history is shorter than Bitcoin's.
None of this shows where DOGE goes next. A past share of 48.80% is not a chance of rising, and nothing here is a reason to buy or sell.
