Solana price history in numbers: how wild is SOL?
Binance SOL moved a typical 2.91% a day, fell 94.63% in 2022, and ended higher over 24 hours 49.66% of the time. Compared with BTC, year by year.
On Binance, Solana's typical day moved 2.91%, up or down, from September 2020 to October 2026, the largest of ten big coins we measured and about twice Bitcoin's 1.38%. Its worst year, 2022, fell 94.63% from the January high to the December low, and the climb back took 442 days. Over 24 hours, SOL ended higher 49.66% of the time, a little below a coin flip.
This is a measured history of past cases, not a forecast.
How big is a normal day for Solana?
The typical day is the middle value when you line up every day's move, ignoring direction. A 3% rise and a 3% fall both count as 3%. We use the middle because a few huge days would drag an average up.
The table covers Binance SOLUSDT and BTCUSDT perps. A perp is a futures contract that never expires. The moves are close-to-close daily changes. Our SOL data start on September 14, 2020, so 2020 has only 108 daily moves. In those days the typical SOL move was 5.07%. We leave 2020 out of the table, because Bitcoin's full year would not be a fair match.
| Year | SOL typical day | BTC typical day | SOL days over 5% | BTC days over 5% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 4.17% | 2.35% | 43.29% | 20.27% |
| 2022 | 3.38% | 1.47% | 31.78% | 10.96% |
| 2023 | 2.70% | 1.00% | 21.92% | 5.75% |
| 2024 | 2.75% | 1.37% | 23.50% | 6.83% |
| 2025 | 2.49% | 1.15% | 20.55% | 3.84% |
| 2026 (to Oct 19) | 1.74% | 1.17% | 10.96% | 4.79% |
Two things stand out. SOL's typical day was larger than Bitcoin's in every year. And SOL has calmed down: its typical day went from 4.17% in 2021 to 1.74% in 2026.
Among the ten Binance perps we measured, SOL ranked first by typical day over its whole history, just above AVAX (2.88%). By year it was first in 2023, second in 2022, third in 2021, 2024 and 2026, and fourth in 2025. See the most volatile big crypto coins for all ten.
The biggest days came back to back, in the week the FTX exchange collapsed. On November 9, 2022, SOL fell 50.88%. The next day it rose 50.56%. The other large moves were a 37.53% fall on May 19, 2021 and a 36.23% rise on January 8, 2021.
How often did Solana fall 10%, 20% or 30% in a week?
Each day, we compare the close with the close seven days earlier. A separate fall counts once. It begins on the first day past the line after at least a week without one.
| Fall over 7 days of at least | SOL share of days | BTC share of days | SOL separate falls | BTC separate falls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 17.43% (387 of 2,220 days) | 6.79% (176 of 2,592) | 67 | 46 |
| 20% | 4.23% (94 of 2,220 days) | 1.27% (33 of 2,592) | 32 | 10 |
| 30% | 1.08% (24 of 2,220 days) | 0.35% (9 of 2,592) | 8 | 2 |
Bitcoin's history starts a year earlier, in September 2019, and includes the March 2020 crash. So the year-by-year view is fairer.
For the 10% line, SOL's share of days in 2022 was 30.96%, against 12.33% for Bitcoin. In 2025 it was 19.73% against 3.29%. But the gap was not always there. In 2021, Bitcoin had the larger share: 14.52% against 12.88% for SOL.
Big weekly falls cluster. One bad week usually produces several days that count. So the separate-fall column is the more careful count.
What was Solana's worst drop each year, and how long until it recovered?
For each year we found the deepest fall from that year's highest close so far to a later close. Then we counted days from the low until a close reached that old high again. "Not yet" means no recovery by October 19, 2026.
| Year | SOL worst drop | Days from low back to old high | BTC worst drop | BTC days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | -58.06% | 27 | -53.22% | 91 |
| 2022 | -94.63% | 442 | -66.94% | 446 |
| 2023 | -44.94% | 30 | -20.01% | 42 |
| 2024 | -38.35% | 65 | -26.26% | 61 |
| 2025 | -59.79% | not yet | -32.05% | not yet |
| 2026 (to Oct 19) | -57.60% | not yet | -39.52% | not yet |
SOL's 2022 fall was the deepest in the table, but the wait after the low (442 days) was about the same as Bitcoin's (446 days). In 2021 and 2023, SOL got back to its high in 27 and 30 days.
Deep drops sometimes came with quick rebounds and sometimes with long waits. Depth alone did not tell us the wait.
Does Solana rise more often than a coin flip over 24 hours?
We used every hourly close as a start and looked at the close 24 hours later. A coin flip would end higher 50% of the time.
| 24-hour move | SOL | BTC |
|---|---|---|
| Windows measured | 53,417 | 62,335 |
| Share that ended higher | 49.66% | 51.88% |
| Median move | -0.03% | 0.07% |
| Weakest tenth ended at or below | -5.74% | -3.07% |
| Strongest tenth ended at or above | 6.74% | 3.49% |
| Share higher after 0.10% fees | 48.64% | 49.30% |
SOL ended higher slightly less than half the time. The more useful number is the spread. One window in ten ended at or below -5.74%, and one in ten ended at or above 6.74%. For Bitcoin those lines were -3.07% and 3.49%.
In full years the share ran from 44.75% in 2022 to 54.08% in 2021. Neighbouring windows share most of their hours, so 53,417 windows are not 53,417 separate tests. We make no claim that the 49.66% differs from 50% in any reliable way.
What do these numbers not show?
- They do not say what happens next. They describe past cases for one contract on one exchange.
- SOL is a coin that survived and grew large. Coins that faded away are not in this list.
- Fees cover only a 0.10% round trip. They leave out spread, slippage and perp funding payments.
- Daily closes can miss a deeper low inside the day.
- A short history is easy to over-read. SOL has about six years of data, and one year, 2022, supplies the deepest fall.
How we measured this
We used Binance SOLUSDT and BTCUSDT perp bars: daily for sizes, falls and drawdowns, and hourly for 24-hour moves. SOL starts on September 14, 2020 and Bitcoin on September 8, 2019. Daily data run through October 19, 2026 and hourly moves through October 20, 2026. We counted only complete windows with no missing closes. All changes are simple percent changes between closes. A flat result does not count as up. We did not use any other exchange for SOL.
