XRP price history in numbers: big days and long waits
Binance XRP had a typical 1.96% day but a 73.23% one-day jump, and its 2021 drop took 1,229 days to recover. Moves, drops and 24-hour odds vs BTC.
On Binance, XRP's typical day moved 1.96%, up or down, from January 2020 to October 2026, yet its biggest day was a 73.23% rise on July 13, 2023. The 2021 drop (-71.26%) took 1,229 days from its low to recover. Over 24 hours, XRP ended higher 49.32% of the time, just under a coin flip.
This is a measured history of past cases, not a forecast.
How big is a normal day for XRP?
The typical day is the middle value when you line up every day's move, ignoring direction. A 2% rise and a 2% fall both count as 2%. The average day adds all the moves and divides by the number of days, so a few giant days push it up.
For XRP the two numbers differ a lot. The typical day was 1.96%. The average day was 3.17%. That gap is the mark of a coin with calm days and rare giant ones. By typical day, XRP ranked sixth of the ten big coins we measured on Binance, level with Ethereum (1.95%). See the most volatile big crypto coins for all ten.
The table covers Binance XRPUSDT and BTCUSDT perps. A perp is a futures contract that never expires. The moves are close-to-close daily changes.
| Year | XRP typical day | BTC typical day | XRP days over 5% | BTC days over 5% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 2.03% | 1.47% | 19.17% | 12.02% |
| 2021 | 3.29% | 2.35% | 36.44% | 20.27% |
| 2022 | 2.14% | 1.47% | 19.45% | 10.96% |
| 2023 | 1.46% | 1.00% | 9.04% | 5.75% |
| 2024 | 1.55% | 1.37% | 15.57% | 6.83% |
| 2025 | 1.99% | 1.15% | 16.71% | 3.84% |
| 2026 (to Oct 19) | 1.53% | 1.17% | 8.22% | 4.79% |
Look at 2024. XRP's typical day (1.55%) was close to Bitcoin's (1.37%). Yet 15.57% of XRP days moved more than 5%, against 6.83% for Bitcoin. The typical day hides the big ones.
The largest days were far outside the norm:
- Rises: 73.23% on July 13, 2023 (the day of a US court ruling in the SEC's case against Ripple, the company behind XRP), 56.90% on January 30, 2021, and 44.44% on April 5, 2021.
- Falls: 41.87% on December 23, 2020, 35.41% on March 12, 2020, and 33.46% on May 19, 2021.
Across all days, 4.72% moved more than 10%.
How often did XRP fall 10%, 20% or 30% in a week?
Each day, we compare the close with the close seven days earlier. A separate fall counts once. It begins on the first day past the line after at least a week without one.
| Fall over 7 days of at least | XRP share of days | BTC share of days | XRP separate falls | BTC separate falls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 11.57% (286 of 2,472 days) | 6.79% (176 of 2,592) | 64 | 46 |
| 20% | 2.47% (61 of 2,472 days) | 1.27% (33 of 2,592) | 18 | 10 |
| 30% | 0.97% (24 of 2,472 days) | 0.35% (9 of 2,592) | 7 | 2 |
Bitcoin's history starts about four months earlier, so we also checked each year. For the 10% line, XRP's share of days was higher than Bitcoin's in all seven years from 2020 to 2026. It was highest in 2021 at 22.19% (Bitcoin: 14.52%) and lowest in 2023 at 4.66% (Bitcoin: 1.92%).
One bad week usually produces several days that count, so the separate-fall column is the more careful count.
What was XRP's worst drop each year, and how long until it recovered?
For each year we found the deepest fall from that year's highest close so far to a later close. Then we counted days from the low until a close reached that old high again. "Not yet" means no recovery by October 19, 2026.
| Year | XRP worst drop | Days from low back to old high | BTC worst drop | BTC days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | -69.60% | 96 | -54.00% | 137 |
| 2021 | -71.26% | 1,229 | -53.22% | 91 |
| 2022 | -64.91% | 881 | -66.94% | 446 |
| 2023 | -42.15% | 431 | -20.01% | 42 |
| 2024 | -42.10% | 130 | -26.26% | 61 |
| 2025 | -49.15% | not yet | -32.05% | not yet |
| 2026 (to Oct 19) | -57.70% | not yet | -39.52% | not yet |
This is where the long waits show. After the 2021 low, XRP needed 1,229 days. Bitcoin's 2021 wait was 91 days.
The waits also ended together. The old highs from 2022, 2023 and 2024 were all reached again within two days: November 14 and 15, 2024. One climb in late 2024 ended three waits at once, and the 2021 wait ended about two weeks later.
Does XRP rise more often than a coin flip over 24 hours?
We used every hourly close as a start and looked at the close 24 hours later. A coin flip would end higher 50% of the time.
| 24-hour move | XRP | BTC |
|---|---|---|
| Windows measured | 59,464 | 62,335 |
| Share that ended higher | 49.32% | 51.88% |
| Median move | -0.03% | 0.07% |
| Weakest tenth ended at or below | -4.38% | -3.07% |
| Strongest tenth ended at or above | 4.79% | 3.49% |
| Share higher after 0.10% fees | 47.89% | 49.30% |
XRP ended higher slightly less than half the time. In full years the share ran from 46.86% in 2022 to 51.89% in 2020. In 2026 so far it was 45.08%.
Neighbouring windows share most of their hours, so 59,464 windows are not 59,464 separate tests. We make no claim that 49.32% differs from 50% in any reliable way. The more useful fact is the spread. One window in ten ended at or below -4.38%, and one in ten ended at or above 4.79%.
What do these numbers not show?
- They do not say what happens next. They describe past cases for one contract on one exchange.
- XRP is a coin that survived and stayed large. Coins that faded away are not in this list.
- Fees cover only a 0.10% round trip. They leave out spread, slippage and perp funding payments.
- Daily closes can miss a deeper low inside the day.
- A single huge day, such as July 13, 2023, can change an average a lot. It tells us such days happened, not when they will happen again.
How we measured this
We used Binance XRPUSDT and BTCUSDT perp bars: daily for sizes, falls and drawdowns, and hourly for 24-hour moves. XRP starts on January 6, 2020 and Bitcoin on September 8, 2019. Daily data run through October 19, 2026 and hourly moves through October 20, 2026. We counted only complete windows with no missing closes. All changes are simple percent changes between closes. A flat result does not count as up. A small number of early Binance daily closes disagree with the hourly bars. We quote no single price from those days. We did not use any other exchange for XRP.
