An AI agent is a chat app like ChatGPT or Claude that can use tools, not just write text. For crypto research, the most useful tool is real price data. Without it, the AI can only guess from a screenshot or from memory. With it, the AI can count what happened in past cases and show you the numbers.
These guides show how to connect an AI to real data, how to ask questions it can answer honestly, and how to check its work before you trust it.
What we measured
- Most moves are close to a coin flip. On hourly Binance BTCUSDT prices from September 2019 to October 2026, price was higher 24 hours later in 51.88% of 62,335 cases, but only 49.30% after assumed fees of 0.05% to enter and 0.05% to exit.
- Fees can hide most of a gain. A simple moving-average rule on hourly Binance Bitcoin gained 464.36% before fees and 167.73% after a 0.05% fee on each side, from September 2019 to October 2026.
- One timing bug can fake a winner. On the same 61,901 hours of Binance BTCUSDT from September 2019 to September 2026, using the coming hour by mistake changed a Sharpe score (a number that compares average results with how much they swing) from -8.00 to 59.41.
- The best of many tries often fails later. Out of 1,000 random hourly Bitcoin rules, the one with the best score on 2019 to 2022 gained 155.22% after fees there, then lost 51.72% on January 2023 to September 2026. 83.60% of the 1,000 rules scored lower on the later dates.
- Look-alike charts did not beat a simple guess. At 3,600 times across 12 markets, from January 2020 to September 2026, the direction of the 10 closest past charts was right 50.22% of the time over 24 hours, while always guessing "up" was right 50.92% of the time.
These are past cases, not a forecast. They show why an AI answer needs real data, fees and a test on unseen dates before it means much.
