ChatGPT vs Claude for crypto trading research: what each does
What ChatGPT and Claude each document for web search, files and MCP tools, what we could not confirm, and why both need a data tool for real numbers.
Both can help with crypto research, but neither documents built-in crypto price history, so the data tool you connect decides your numbers. Claude documents a code sandbox that turns a CSV into charts, and OpenAI documents a way to build connected apps for ChatGPT. Without data, a direction guess starts near a coin flip: Binance BTCUSDT was higher 24 hours later in 51.88% of 62,335 hourly cases.
Below is what each company documents, what we could not confirm, and how to get the same measured numbers into either app. These are past cases, not a forecast.
For the setup steps, see Connect Claude or ChatGPT to crypto data with MCP.
What do ChatGPT and Claude each document?
This table uses each company's own help and developer pages. "Not confirmed" means we could not read or find a statement. It does not mean the feature is missing.
| Question | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Connect outside tools with MCP | Custom connectors using remote MCP work on Claude, Cowork and Claude Desktop. The Free plan is limited to one custom connector. | Developer docs describe plugins in ChatGPT that combine skills, MCP servers and optional screens, and can be submitted to a public directory. Plan eligibility is not confirmed. |
| Web search | Available on the Free plan. On Team and Enterprise, an owner must turn it on first. On Free it counts toward usage limits that refresh every five hours. | The OpenAI API (not the ChatGPT app) has a web search tool with citations, domain filters and a deep-research mode. Search inside the ChatGPT app by plan is not confirmed. |
| Files and data analysis | Runs code in a sandbox to make xlsx, pptx, docx and PDF files, and to write Python for data analysis, including CSV files and PNG charts. Uploads and downloads in code execution are capped at 30MB. | Not confirmed. |
| Built-in crypto market data | None documented. | None documented. |
| Search for look-alike price charts | Not documented. It can analyze uploaded or fetched data with code. | Not documented. |
| Price | Free is $0. Pro is $17 per month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 monthly. Max is from $100 per month. | Not confirmed. |
Claude also lists Team seats at $20 per seat per month billed annually or $25 monthly (Standard), and $100 or $125 (Premium). Enterprise is $20 per seat per month, with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates. Prices change, so check the pricing pages.
Two limits to know. Claude's remote connections come from Anthropic's cloud, so a server must be reachable over the public internet. Local servers set up through a claude_desktop_config.json file are not available in Cowork or claude.ai.
We could not read OpenAI's help pages on plans, MCP, file analysis and data analysis, so those cells say "Not confirmed". That is a gap in what we could check, not a claim about ChatGPT.
Why do both guess without data?
A chat app learned from text up to some date. It does not know today's price. It may mix up exchanges, dates or contract types and still sound sure. Neither company's pages claim market-data coverage for their apps, so the data has to come from somewhere else.
The odds you are guessing against are close to even. We measured how often each market rose over the next 24 hours, starting from every hourly close. A "perp" is a futures contract that never expires. "Spot" is the coin itself, priced in US dollars. The last column assumes a 0.05% fee to enter and 0.05% to exit.
| Market | Cases | Higher after 24 hours | After assumed fees | Middle 80% of 24-hour moves |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Binance BTCUSDT perp | 62,335 | 51.88% | 49.30% | −3.07% to +3.49% |
| Binance ETHUSDT perp | 60,425 | 52.03% | 50.41% | −4.14% to +4.76% |
| Binance SOLUSDT perp | 53,417 | 49.66% | 48.64% | −5.74% to +6.74% |
| Binance XRPUSDT perp | 59,464 | 49.32% | 47.89% | −4.38% to +4.79% |
| Binance DOGEUSDT perp | 54,999 | 48.80% | 47.50% | −5.15% to +5.49% |
| Binance ADAUSDT perp | 58,864 | 48.39% | 47.25% | −5.01% to +5.62% |
| Binance AVAXUSDT perp | 53,201 | 48.76% | 47.76% | −5.95% to +6.71% |
| Binance LINKUSDT perp | 59,200 | 50.49% | 49.56% | −5.46% to +6.20% |
| Binance BNBUSDT perp | 58,624 | 52.28% | 50.43% | −3.61% to +4.12% |
| Binance TRXUSDT perp | 59,248 | 53.84% | 51.74% | −3.20% to +3.41% |
| Coinbase BTC-USD spot | 98,036 | 52.98% | 50.49% | −3.31% to +3.88% |
| Coinbase ETH-USD spot | 90,048 | 51.30% | 49.76% | −4.59% to +5.30% |
Seven of the 12 markets rose in more than half of cases, and none rose in more than 54% of them. After fees, 11 of the 12 were under 51%. The "middle 80%" column shows where all but the most extreme 1 in 10 moves on each side landed. A single day often swings several percent either way, far more than a 1 or 2 point lean. For more on these base rates, see can past price predict crypto?.
The history differs by market, so the rows do not cover the same dates. Cases also overlap: a start at 1:00 and one at 2:00 share 23 of their 24 hours. They are not 62,335 separate tests.
Will both apps give the same answer when they read the same data?
The numbers will match, because the tool returns the same numbers to either app. What can differ is the part the app does itself: how it counts, which numbers it picks, how it words the result, and which cautions it adds.
We did not run a side-by-side test of the two apps, so we do not say which writes better. Here is a way to check for yourself:
- Connect the same data tool to both.
- Ask both the same question, naming the market, bar size, dates and time ahead.
- Ask both to list which numbers came from the tool and which they calculated.
- Compare the counts. If a count differs, ask each to show its steps.
For a longer guide to the connection steps, see connect Claude or ChatGPT to crypto data with MCP. For why a guess from chart look-alikes was no better than guessing "up", see do chart look-alikes predict crypto?.
What should you pick, then?
It depends on what you need, and these are the documented facts:
- If you want to upload a CSV and get a chart or spreadsheet back, Claude documents a code sandbox that does this.
- If you want to build a connected app for a public directory, OpenAI's developer docs describe that path for ChatGPT.
- If you only want measured numbers, pick the app you already use and connect a data tool that returns bars and says where they came from. Crypto MCP servers compared lists some options.
How we measured this
For the table of 24-hour moves, we used hourly closing prices from Binance perps and Coinbase spot, from each market's start date through October 20, 2026. From every hourly close we measured the percent change to the close 24 hours later. We kept only stretches with no missing hours; a move of exactly zero counted as not up. The fee column takes off 0.05% on each side and leaves out funding, spreads and price slips. The app facts come from each company's own pages, and are limited to what those pages state.
Try this in Comparand
Comparand speaks MCP, so any app that can add a remote MCP server and send an Authorization header can use it. That includes AI apps such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, if your plan and app version allow outside connectors. Connection steps are in the docs. Comparand returns past data only. It does not forecast, tell you what to trade, or place orders.
Ask your connected app: "Call hl_labels_live for BTC and show the newest labels and their time."
- You get the newest per-minute market labels for that coin from the live Hyperliquid feed.
- If the data is more than 120 seconds old, the call is refused with a live_stale error. A refused call is not billed.
- On a plan, data tools are unlimited under fair-use limits. On pay as you go, this call costs $0.005 from credits.
Then ask: "Call usage and show my credit balance." That tool is free. Every answer also carries a record of its data sources and what the call cost, so you can ask either app to repeat it back. You can try 3 coins free in a browser first.
The short version
- Neither app documents built-in crypto price history, so both need a data tool.
- Claude documents remote MCP connectors, web search and a code sandbox for CSV files and charts. OpenAI's developer docs describe MCP inside ChatGPT plugins.
- We could not confirm several ChatGPT plan details, so we did not list them.
- Without data, a direction guess starts near a coin flip: 51.88% for Binance BTCUSDT over 24 hours.
- With the same data tool, both apps get the same numbers; compare how each explains them.
Questions people ask
Can ChatGPT or Claude predict crypto prices?
Neither documents built-in market data or a price forecast. Without data, a direction guess starts near a coin flip: on Binance BTCUSDT, price was higher 24 hours later in 51.88% of 62,335 hourly cases. Past cases are not a forecast.
Which is better for crypto research, ChatGPT or Claude?
We did not run a head-to-head test, so we do not pick one. Claude's help pages document a code sandbox for CSV files and charts plus remote MCP connectors. OpenAI's developer docs describe ChatGPT plugins that can include MCP servers. The data tool you connect matters more than the app.
Can Claude or ChatGPT use outside crypto data?
Yes, through MCP, a standard way for AI apps to use outside tools. Claude documents custom connectors that use remote MCP. OpenAI's developer docs describe MCP servers inside ChatGPT plugins. Check your own plan and app version before you rely on it.
Will ChatGPT and Claude give the same answer from the same data?
The numbers a data tool returns are the same for both apps. The wording, the extra math and the caveats each app adds can differ. Ask both to name which numbers came from the tool and which they worked out themselves.
