# What time does the crypto daily candle close? UTC and local

Binance and Coinbase daily candles close at 00:00 UTC, 8 pm in New York in summer. The next hour moved Bitcoin 0.44% on average. Local times inside.

On Binance and Coinbase, the crypto daily candle closes at 00:00 UTC. That is 8 pm in New York in summer (EDT) and 7 pm in winter (EST). The hour right after that close is a busy one: Binance Bitcoin moved an average of 0.44% between 00:00 and 01:00 UTC, against 0.30% at 04:00 UTC, across 2,598 days from September 2019 to October 2026.

A "[daily candle](https://comparand.xyz/blog/how-to-read-candlestick-chart)" is one bar that covers a full day: its first price, highest price, lowest price and last price. The last price is called the close. These are past cases, not a forecast.

For every hour of the day ranked by move size, see [Most volatile crypto hours of the day](https://comparand.xyz/blog/most-volatile-hours-crypto-utc).

## What time does the daily candle close?

In our data, daily candles on Binance and Coinbase run from 00:00 UTC to 00:00 UTC. UTC is the shared world clock. It has no daylight saving, so the close always lands on the same UTC time.

Other exchanges and chart apps can pick their own cut-off. Some let you change the time zone of your chart. So the first thing to check is the setting in your own app, not a rule you remember.

Our [4-hour bars](https://comparand.xyz/blog/timeframe-1h-vs-4h-vs-daily-chart) close at 00, 04, 08, 12, 16 and 20 UTC. Six of them make one daily candle.

## What time is that in New York, London and Tokyo?

Local clocks move for daylight saving, but UTC does not. So the same close lands at a different local time in summer and winter.

| Local city | Summer clock (July) | Winter clock (January) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Los Angeles | 17:00 (5 pm) | 16:00 (4 pm) |
| New York | 20:00 (8 pm EDT) | 19:00 (7 pm EST) |
| London | 01:00 (1 am) | 00:00 (midnight) |
| Mumbai | 05:30 (5:30 am) | 05:30 (5:30 am), no change |
| Singapore | 08:00 (8 am) | 08:00 (8 am), no change |
| Tokyo | 09:00 (9 am) | 09:00 (9 am), no change |

Mumbai, Singapore and Tokyo do not use daylight saving. For New York, the candle that carries one date covers 8 pm on the day before to 8 pm on that date in summer. So a New York trader sees the "day" end in the evening.

The US and the UK switch clocks on different dates. In 2026, the UK moves back on October 25 and the US on November 1. For that one week, London matches UTC while New York is 4 hours behind UTC. The gap between them is not its usual 5 hours.

## Is the hour after the daily close more volatile?

Yes, in every market we measured. We took one-hour bars, measured the percent change from each close to the next, and removed the sign. The hour that opens at 00:00 UTC is the first hour of the new daily candle.

The table compares it with the last hour of the old day, which opens at 23:00 UTC. The last column ranks the 00:00 hour among all 24 hours, where 1 is the busiest.

| Market | 00:00 UTC hour: average move (hours counted) | 23:00 UTC hour: average move | Rank of 00:00 hour (of 24) |
| --- | --- | --- | ---: |
| BTCUSDT (Binance perp) | 0.44% (2,598) | 0.37% | 5 |
| ETHUSDT | 0.60% (2,518) | 0.50% | 4 |
| SOLUSDT | 0.92% (2,226) | 0.70% | 3 |
| XRPUSDT | 0.73% (2,478) | 0.55% | 2 |
| DOGEUSDT | 0.84% (2,292) | 0.65% | 3 |
| ADAUSDT | 0.80% (2,453) | 0.64% | 3 |
| AVAXUSDT | 0.94% (2,217) | 0.71% | 3 |
| LINKUSDT | 0.85% (2,467) | 0.71% | 3 |
| BNBUSDT | 0.62% (2,443) | 0.46% | 2 |
| TRXUSDT | 0.56% (2,469) | 0.43% | 1 |
| BTC-USD (Coinbase spot) | 0.48% (4,107) | 0.42% | 5 |
| ETH-USD (Coinbase spot) | 0.68% (3,801) | 0.58% | 5 |

A perp is a futures contract that never expires. Spot means you buy the coin itself, priced in US dollars. The counts are for the 00:00 hour, and each market starts on its own date, so compare rows with care.

In all 12 markets, the first hour of the new day moved more than the last hour of the old one. For 8 of the 10 Binance coins, it ranked in the top three hours of the day. Bitcoin's busiest hour was 14:00 UTC at 0.54%, and its quietest was 04:00 UTC at 0.30%, so the 00:00 hour sits closer to the busy end. For the whole day, see [which hours move crypto the most](https://comparand.xyz/blog/most-volatile-hours-crypto-utc) and [what happens at the US market open](https://comparand.xyz/blog/does-bitcoin-dump-at-us-market-open).

We measured when moves happened, not why.

## Does the first hour of a new day show which way price goes?

No. We checked direction for Binance BTCUSDT. Price rose in 48.85% of its 00:00 UTC hours across 2,598 hours. The average signed move, with direction kept, was about 1 basis point. A basis point is one hundredth of one percent, so that is 0.01%.

That is far below the 0.05% fee per side we assume in our tests, and too small to tell from chance. Across all 24 hours for Bitcoin, 3 passed a basic test for being different from zero, where about 1 would be expected by luck. A stricter test, which allows for checking 24 hours at once, leaves only one. So we do not call any hour a pattern. This hour is busy, but it is not a direction.

## Why does my chart show a different daily close?

Several plain reasons can make two charts disagree:

- **Time zone.** Your app may cut days at your local midnight, not at 00:00 UTC. Then each "day" holds different hours.
- **Exchange cut-off.** An exchange may set its own start for a daily candle.
- **Market type.** A spot price and a perp price can differ a little, even for the same coin.
- **Candle not finished.** A candle still forming shows the latest price as its "close". That price can still change.

Data can also disagree inside one exchange. In our Binance data, the daily close and the hourly close for the same moment did not match on 4 market-days. It is rare, but it is a reason to name your source when you share a number.

## Why do only completed candles count?

A candle is finished only when its time is up. Before that, its high, low and close can still change.

If a test or a search uses an unfinished candle, it uses a price nobody knew yet. That is look-ahead bias, a timing mistake that makes results look better than they could have been. We show one case in [look-ahead bias in a backtest](https://comparand.xyz/blog/look-ahead-bias-backtest-example).

The safe habit is to set the decision time at a candle close, such as 00:00 UTC, and use only candles that ended before it.

## How we measured this

We used public one-hour price bars for 10 Binance USDT perps and two Coinbase spot markets, from each market's start date to October 20, 2026 at 00:00 UTC. For every bar we took the percent change from the previous close and removed the sign. Then we grouped the changes by the UTC hour in which the bar opened and averaged each group. Direction used each bar's open-to-close change for the Binance BTCUSDT 00:00 hour.

We kept missing prices empty, left out each market's first bar, and tested no trading rule. Each market covers different years, and a long average can hide years that look different.

## Try this in Comparand

Ask your connected AI agent: "Get completed daily bars for Binance BTCUSDT for the last 30 days. Show each bar's open time in UTC and its close."

- **venue_bars** returns open, high, low and close prices plus volume, for completed bars only. You can ask for 1-day, 4-hour, 1-hour and shorter bars. It is free on every key.
- An unfinished candle is not in the answer, so you do not mix a live price into a daily close.

Then ask: "Find past charts like the last 48 hourly bars of Binance BTCUSDT, ending at 00:00 UTC on [a past date]."

- **shape_analogs** uses the end_utc you choose, which defaults to now. It builds the chart from completed bars.
- It compares the coin only with its own past on the same exchange, and never with an overlapping stretch.
- Each match shows its own later moves at 12, 24 and 48 hours, in basis points. There is no average or hit rate. It costs $0.01 per search from credits.

## The short version

- On Binance and Coinbase, the daily candle closes at 00:00 UTC: 8 pm in New York in summer, 7 pm in winter.
- Your own app may cut the day somewhere else, so check its time zone and the exchange's cut-off.
- The hour after the close averaged a 0.44% move for Binance Bitcoin, more than the 0.37% in the hour before it.
- That hour had no clear direction: Bitcoin rose in 48.85% of 2,598 cases.
- Use only finished candles when you test or search, so no future price slips in.

## Questions people ask

**What time does the crypto daily candle close?**

On Binance and Coinbase, the daily candle runs from 00:00 UTC to 00:00 UTC, so it closes at 00:00 UTC. Other exchanges and chart apps can use a different cut-off, so check the one you use.

**What time is the daily candle close in New York?**

00:00 UTC is 8 pm in New York during US summer time (8 pm EDT) and 7 pm in winter (7 pm EST). In London it is 1 am in summer and midnight in winter. In Tokyo it is 9 am all year.

**Why does my chart show a different daily close than another site?**

The usual causes are a different time zone setting, a different cut-off hour on the exchange, or a different market, such as spot prices versus perpetual futures. A candle that has not finished also shows only the latest price.

**Is the hour after the daily close more volatile?**

In our test, yes: it moved more than the hour before the close in every market. Binance BTCUSDT moved an average 0.44% in the 00:00 to 01:00 UTC hour, against 0.30% at 04:00 UTC. We measured 2,598 of these hours, one per day, from September 2019 to October 2026.

**Does the first hour of a new crypto day show which way price goes?**

No. Binance BTCUSDT rose in 48.85% of its 00:00 UTC hours, and the average signed move was about 1 basis point (0.01%). That is too small to tell from chance.
