# Crypto drawdown recovery time: 10 big coins after 2022

Measured yearly drops for 10 big coins on Binance, how many days each took to get back to its high, and which have not recovered yet.

Big coins fell 43% to 95% within 2022, and the ones that got back to their 2022 high took 316 to 881 days after the low. Bitcoin on Binance (BTCUSDT) fell 66.94% and needed 446 days; Solana fell 94.63% and needed 442; ADA and AVAX still had not recovered by October 19, 2026. These are past cases, not a forecast.

Bitcoin also fell at least 20% from an earlier high within every full year from 2020 through 2025. A recovery time only makes sense once you name the market, the peak, and where you start counting.

For what max drawdown means and how to calculate it, see [What is max drawdown?](https://comparand.xyz/blog/what-is-max-drawdown).

## What counts as a drawdown and a recovery?

A drawdown is a fall from an earlier high to a later low. We used the closing price, which is the price at the end of each day. Each day follows UTC, a shared world time standard.

For each calendar year, we found the largest fall from a closing high reached earlier that year. The recovery date is the first later close, in any year, back at or above that high.

The peak search starts fresh each year. It does not carry in the highest price from earlier years. So “recovered” here means a return to the peak named in that row, not to the highest price the coin ever reached. For example, Bitcoin's 2022 row starts from its January 1, 2022 close of 47,704.35 USDT, already well below its 2021 highs (its April 13, 2021 close was 63,649.71). Measured from the 2021 record instead, the fall would be deeper than 66.94% and the wait longer. The 446 days measure the way back to the 2022 starting high only.

The tables use Binance USDT perpetual contracts, or perps: contracts on a coin's price with no expiry date. USDT is a token designed to track the US dollar. Contract prices can differ from prices for the coins themselves, as we explain in [why Bitcoin prices differ between exchanges](https://comparand.xyz/blog/why-bitcoin-price-differs-between-exchanges).

## How far did these big coins fall in 2022?

Each row is one Binance contract's largest fall within 2022, from 365 daily closes. We searched for recoveries through October 19, 2026; “not yet” means no daily close had reached that row's peak by then.

| Binance market | Peak date → low date in 2022 | Fall | Recovery date | Days from low |
| --- | --- | ---: | --- | ---: |
| BTCUSDT | Jan 1 → Nov 21 | -66.94% | 2024-02-10 | 446 |
| ETHUSDT | Jan 2 → Jun 18 | -74.02% | 2024-03-07 | 628 |
| SOLUSDT | Jan 1 → Dec 29 | -94.63% | 2024-03-15 | 442 |
| XRPUSDT | Feb 8 → Jun 18 | -64.91% | 2024-11-15 | 881 |
| DOGEUSDT | Jan 15 → Jun 18 | -71.33% | 2024-03-27 | 648 |
| ADAUSDT | Jan 17 → Dec 29 | -84.77% | Not yet | Not yet |
| AVAXUSDT | Jan 1 → Dec 30 | -90.47% | Not yet | Not yet |
| LINKUSDT | Jan 10 → Dec 30 | -80.43% | 2024-12-12 | 713 |
| BNBUSDT | Jan 2 → Jun 18 | -62.93% | 2024-03-12 | 633 |
| TRXUSDT | May 8 → Nov 17 | -43.13% | 2023-09-29 | 316 |

The deepest fall did not have the longest completed recovery. SOL fell further than XRP, yet SOL reached its earlier peak sooner after its low. ADA and AVAX had unfinished waits, so we cannot give them final recovery times. These cases do not show that every coin eventually recovers.

The Bitcoin result is not a quirk of one exchange. On Coinbase's BTC-USD spot market (the coin itself, priced in US dollars), the largest 2022 fall was -66.98%, between the same dates, and it also took 446 days from the low.

## How big is a normal year's drop for Bitcoin?

2022 was Bitcoin's worst year in this history, but not the only bad one. Here is the largest fall within each year for Binance BTCUSDT, using daily closes. The history starts September 2019, and 2026 runs only through October 19.

| Year | Largest fall within the year | Days from low to recovery |
| --- | ---: | ---: |
| 2019 (partial) | -36.45% | 223 |
| 2020 | -54.00% | 137 |
| 2021 | -53.22% | 91 |
| 2022 | -66.94% | 446 |
| 2023 | -20.01% | 42 |
| 2024 | -26.26% | 61 |
| 2025 | -32.05% | Not yet |
| 2026 (to Oct 19) | -39.52% | Not yet |

Even the smallest, in 2023, was about 20%. The 2025 drop started from a close of 124,628.5 USDT on October 6, 2025, and had not been recovered when our observations ended. Coinbase's longer Bitcoin history (BTC-USD, from 2015) shows an older case too: an 81.38% fall in 2018 that took 703 days from the low to recover.

## Should you count recovery days from the peak or the low?

Counting from the low measures the time after the bottom. Counting from the peak includes the fall too. For Binance BTCUSDT in 2022, the peak close was 47,704.35 USDT on January 1 and the low was 15,773.0 USDT on November 21. Price first closed back at or above the peak on February 10, 2024. That is 446 days from the low, but 770 days from the peak: more than two years with that high out of reach.

*Diagram: Show the Binance BTCUSDT daily-close peak on January 1 2022, low on November 21 2022, and recovery on February 10 2024, marking 446 days from the low and 770 days from the peak.*
We can name the low only after seeing later prices. During a fall, you cannot know whether the lowest close has happened yet. For shorter waits, see [what happened after Bitcoin's biggest hourly drops](https://comparand.xyz/blog/bitcoin-after-big-one-hour-drops).

## Does a smaller fall mean a faster recovery?

Not always, even within the same market. Here are the largest falls within 2024 and 2025 for Binance ETHUSDT, using daily closes.

| Yearly case | Peak date → low date | Fall | Recovery date | Days from low |
| --- | --- | ---: | --- | ---: |
| 2024 | 2024-03-11 → 2024-09-06 | -45.37% | 2025-08-09 | 337 |
| 2025 | 2025-01-06 → 2025-04-08 | -60.04% | 2025-07-20 | 103 |

The deeper fall recovered faster, and even earlier on the calendar. But the two had different prices to reach: the 2024 peak was 4,070.52 USDT and the 2025 peak was lower, at 3,685.72 USDT. Reaching the lower peak did not complete the older recovery.

So always name the peak when you say a coin “recovered”. Our guide to [why past moves are not forecasts](https://comparand.xyz/blog/past-crypto-returns-not-forecasts) explains why a past result cannot tell you what a new fall will do.

## What does “not yet recovered” leave unanswered?

It leaves the final wait unknown. It does not mean recovery is impossible or close. If you left unfinished cases out of an average, you would only count the recoveries that finished, and the average wait would look shorter than it was.

We also studied selected coins that still exist. Coins that failed or stopped trading are outside this group, so these results are not the recovery record for all crypto.

## How can you use this in your own research?

If you test a long-only idea on past data, check that your test period includes at least one deep fall and its long wait, such as 2022. A test that only covers 2023 and 2024 saw Bitcoin's two smallest yearly falls in this history (-20.01% and -26.26%). Also report unfinished recoveries as "not yet", not as missing. Our [test of 1,000 random trading rules](https://comparand.xyz/blog/overfitting-1000-random-trading-rules) shows how much the dates you pick can change a result. This is a way to check your own test, not a forecast of the next fall.

## How we measured this

We used daily closing prices for the named Binance contracts (and Coinbase BTC-USD for the older check), with observations ending October 19, 2026. Each year, we restarted the peak and found the largest percentage fall from an earlier closing high within that year. We then searched later closes for the first return to that peak and counted calendar days from both the peak and the low. These are price changes before trading fees or funding, the regular payments between perp traders. We left missing prices blank and kept partly observed years; daily closes can miss a lower price or a recovery reached during the day.

## Try this in Comparand

In an AI app connected to Comparand, ask: “Which exchanges offer daily bars? Get Binance BTCUSDT perpetual daily bars from January 1, 2022 through October 19, 2026 and find the largest fall and the recovery date.”

What comes back:

- **venue_coverage:** the exchanges served, with their data types and time intervals.
- **venue_bars at 1d:** completed daily opening, highest, lowest and closing prices, plus volume. Your AI app works out the fall and recovery from the closes.
- Both tools are free on every key.

For newer coins, ask: “Show the coins that first appeared in the Hyperliquid archive since my chosen date, marking incomplete rows.” You get:

- **hl_listings:** one row per listing, with price, volume, liquidations (trades the exchange closed because the trader's money ran out) and funding for the first 24 hours and 7 days. Rows with incomplete data are marked, so unfinished cases stay visible.
- It costs $0.005 per call on pay as you go and is included on plans. See the [connection and tool guide](https://comparand.xyz/docs), or [try 3 coins free](https://comparand.xyz/try) to explore Comparand's past-chart search.

## The short version

- In 2022, 10 big coins on Binance fell 43% to 95% within the year; Bitcoin fell 66.94% and took 446 days from its low to regain its 2022 high.
- Bitcoin fell at least 20% within every full year from 2020 to 2025.
- Name the exchange, contract, peak, and daily-close method when comparing recovery times.
- Count from the peak for the full wait, or from the low for the time after the fall.
- A deeper fall can recover faster, and a newer yearly peak can return before an older one.
- Keep unfinished recoveries visible. Their final recovery times remain unknown.

## Questions people ask

**What is a crypto drawdown?**

A drawdown is a fall from an earlier price high to a later low. We measured each calendar year's largest fall using the price at the end of each day.

**How long did Bitcoin take to recover from its 2022 drawdown?**

For Binance's BTCUSDT contract, the largest fall within 2022 was 66.94%, using daily closing prices. Its January 1, 2022 closing price returned on February 10, 2024: 446 days after the November 21, 2022 low, or 770 days after that peak. That is the 2022 starting high, not the higher 2021 record.

**Does a deeper crypto drop always take longer to recover?**

No. In the Binance daily-close cases for 2022, SOLUSDT fell 94.63% and reached its yearly peak 442 days after its low; BTCUSDT fell 66.94% and took 446 days. These cases do not tell us how long another recovery will take.

**Does not yet recovered mean a coin will never recover?**

No. It means no later daily closing price we observed had reached that case's peak by October 19, 2026, when our observations end. We do not know the final recovery time.
