# Avalanche (AVAX) price history: drops, recoveries and big days

AVAX fell 90.47% within 2022 on Binance, from $114.11 to $10.87, and fell 10% in a week on 20.40% of days. Yearly drops, recoveries, big days.

On Binance's AVAXUSDT perp, Avalanche closed at least 10% below its close seven days earlier on 20.40% of days from September 2020 to October 19, 2026. Bitcoin did that on 6.79% of days. Within 2022, its daily close fell 90.47%, from $114.11 on January 1 to $10.87 on December 30.

These are past cases, not a forecast. A "perp" is a futures contract that never expires, and USDT is a dollar-linked coin used to show the price.

## How big is a normal Avalanche day?

We measured how far the closing price moved from the previous UTC day's close, with the plus or minus sign removed. The **typical day** is the median of those sizes: half the days were smaller and half were bigger.

| Year | AVAX days counted | AVAX typical day | AVAX days over 10% | BTC typical day | BTC days over 10% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 99 | 3.42% | 4.04% | 1.47% | 2.19% |
| 2021 | 365 | 4.74% | 21.37% | 2.35% | 2.74% |
| 2022 | 365 | 3.38% | 7.95% | 1.47% | 2.47% |
| 2023 | 365 | 2.08% | 4.11% | 1.00% | 0.27% |
| 2024 | 366 | 2.96% | 4.37% | 1.37% | 0.55% |
| 2025 | 365 | 2.97% | 4.93% | 1.15% | 0.00% |
| 2026 | 292 | 1.84% | 2.40% | 1.17% | 0.68% |
| All years | 2,217 | 2.88% | 7.53% | 1.38% | 1.31% |

AVAX's history starts on September 23, 2020, so its 2020 row has only 99 days. Both coins' 2026 rows run only through October 19, 2026.

*Diagram: Paired bars of AVAX's and Bitcoin's typical daily move for each year from 2020 to 2026 on Binance, with the partial years marked.*
AVAX's typical day was bigger than Bitcoin's in every year. Among the 10 Binance coins we measured, it had the biggest typical day in 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025. Over its whole history it ranked 2nd, just behind [Solana](https://comparand.xyz/blog/solana-price-history-in-numbers); see [10 coins ranked by volatility](https://comparand.xyz/blog/most-volatile-big-crypto-coins). In 2026 through October 19, AVAX's typical day was 1.84%, its lowest of any year.

On 27.47% of days, AVAX moved more than 5%. For Bitcoin it was 9.24% of days.

## What were Avalanche's biggest days?

On 1 day in 10, AVAX moved more than 8.80%. On 1 day in 100, it moved more than 20.41%. The average daily move was 4.07%.

The biggest rises were +72.11% on February 10, 2021, +36.72% on January 16, 2021 and +34.02% on March 9, 2021. The biggest falls were −37.89% on May 19, 2021, −30.16% on May 11, 2022 and −27.37% on October 10, 2025.

The big days were not all in one year: the falls came in 2021, 2022 and 2025.

## How often did AVAX fall 10%, 20% or 30% in a week?

For every day, we compared the closing price with the close seven days earlier.

| Fall over 7 days | AVAX: days (share of days) | AVAX: separate episodes | BTC: days (share of days) | BTC: separate episodes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10% or more | 451 (20.40%) | 72 | 176 (6.79%) | 46 |
| 20% or more | 122 (5.52%) | 32 | 33 (1.27%) | 10 |
| 30% or more | 26 (1.18%) | 10 | 9 (0.35%) | 2 |

One bad week gives several bad days in a row. So we also count **separate episodes**: the first day past the line after at least seven days without one.

A 10% weekly fall happened on 29.04% of days in 2022 (106 of 365) and on 11.78% of days in 2023 (43 of 365). In 2026 through October 19 it was 10.62% (31 of 292).

The 20% falls clustered. There were 41 such days in 2021 and 41 in 2022, but only 2 in 2023. Of the 26 days with a 30% weekly fall, 15 were in 2021, 10 in 2022 and 1 in 2025. Big weekly jumps were more common: AVAX closed at least 30% above its close seven days earlier on 106 days (4.79%), 60 of them in 2021. Part of this is percent math: a fall can never pass 100%, but a rise can.

## How deep were AVAX's yearly drops, and how long did recovery take?

For each calendar year, we found the largest fall from a closing high reached earlier that year. Then we counted the days from the low until the first later close at or above that high. A recovery here means getting back to that year's own high, not to an all-time high.

| Year | AVAX biggest fall | High to low (date, closing price) | AVAX days from low back to that high | BTC biggest fall | BTC days from low back |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | −37.91% | 2020-09-25, $4.69 to 2020-12-27, $2.91 | 12 | −54.00% | 137 |
| 2021 | −82.49% | 2021-02-10, $54.92 to 2021-07-20, $9.62 | 35 | −53.22% | 91 |
| 2022 | −90.47% | 2022-01-01, $114.11 to 2022-12-30, $10.87 | not yet | −66.94% | 446 |
| 2023 | −58.95% | 2023-02-03, $21.38 to 2023-09-24, $8.78 | 53 | −20.01% | 42 |
| 2024 | −67.83% | 2024-03-18, $60.70 to 2024-08-05, $19.53 | not yet | −26.26% | 61 |
| 2025 | −74.04% | 2025-01-06, $44.05 to 2025-12-18, $11.44 | not yet | −32.05% | not yet |
| 2026 | −60.09% | 2026-01-13, $14.76 to 2026-06-19, $5.89 | not yet | −39.52% | not yet |

"Not yet" means no daily close through October 19, 2026 had got back to that high. It does not mean it never will.

Two things stand out. First, AVAX's yearly fall was deeper than Bitcoin's in every row except 2020, where Bitcoin's −54.00% fall came in February and March, before our AVAX history starts.

Second, 2022 was a year-long slide. The highest daily close of the year was the first one (January 1), and the lowest came on December 30. Three of the seven years were regained: 2020, 2021 and 2023, in 12 to 53 days after the low. The other four (2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026) were not. ## Did AVAX rise more often than a coin flip over 24 hours?

For every hourly closing price, we looked at the price 24 hours later and asked whether it was higher. A coin flip would say yes 50% of the time.

| 24 hours later | AVAX | BTC |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly start points | 53,201 | 62,335 |
| Share higher | 48.76% | 51.88% |
| Share higher after 0.05% fee each way | 47.76% | 49.30% |
| Middle move | −0.12% | +0.07% |
| 10th percentile | −5.95% | −3.07% |
| 90th percentile | +6.71% | +3.49% |

By year, AVAX's share higher ranged from 45.19% in 2022 to 53.15% in 2021. In 2023 it was 50.81%, and in 2024 it was 47.21%.

The spread is wide: 1 start in 10 ended below −5.95%, and 1 in 10 ended above +6.71%. Bitcoin's 10th and 90th percentiles were much closer to zero.

## What does this not show?

It does not show where AVAX goes next, and nothing here is a reason to buy or sell. The 48.76% is not a chance of rising. It covers one contract on one exchange, for a coin that still trades today. Hourly start points overlap, so 53,201 is not 53,201 separate tests. AVAX has a shorter history than Bitcoin, and we did not test why prices moved.

## How we measured this

We used Binance's daily and hourly price bars for AVAXUSDT and BTCUSDT through October 19, 2026. Yearly drops restart the running high each January and use daily closes. The 24-hour test uses every hourly close that had a full 24 hours of later hourly closes, and flat results count as not higher. Daily closes can miss a low or high inside the day. The fee line applies 0.05% to entry and exit and leaves out funding, spread and slippage.

## Try this in Comparand

With Comparand connected to your AI agent, you can repeat this yourself:

- Ask: "Which exchanges do you cover, and what data does each have?" The free **venue_coverage** tool lists each exchange with its datasets, kinds and intervals. The chart search covers AVAX on Binance, Bybit and OKX perps and on Coinbase spot.
- Ask: "Get Binance AVAXUSDT daily bars from September 23, 2020 through October 19, 2026 and count the days it fell 10% in a week." The **venue_bars** tool returns opening, highest, lowest and closing prices plus volume, completed bars only. Use 1d for days or 1h for hours. It is free, and your agent does the math.
- Ask: "Show the 10 closest past charts to AVAXUSDT's last 48 hourly bars on Binance, and what the price did 12, 24 and 48 hours later." The **shape_analogs** tool uses only AVAX's own past on Binance. It shows each match's path and later moves in bp (100 bp is 1%), costs $0.01 per search, and returns no average or hit rate.
